Using a typing certificate for jobs and school
Many office, data entry, customer support and transcription roles ask for a minimum typing speed. A certificate is a simple way to show yours upfront. Take the 3-minute test for the steadiest result, and aim for 95% accuracy or better: employers care about accuracy as much as speed.
This is a self-issued record of a test you took on TypePlay, not an accredited qualification. Some employers will ask you to take their own test too, so practise with the job typing tests and the data entry typing test, and read our guide to typing tests for jobs.

Typing certificate: common questions
Is the typing certificate really free?
Yes. Take the test, add your name and download the certificate as a PDF or image. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment.
What is printed on the certificate?
Your name, your words per minute (WPM), your accuracy, the test length (1 or 3 minutes), the date, a speed level such as Proficient or Advanced typist, and a certificate number.
Should I take the 1-minute or the 3-minute test?
The 1-minute test is the classic quick benchmark. The 3-minute test is a steadier measure and closer to the timed tests many employers use, so it carries more weight on a CV.
Can I use the certificate for a job application?
Yes, you can attach it to an application, add it to your CV or post it on LinkedIn. It is a self-issued record of a test you took on TypePlay, not an accredited qualification, so some employers will also ask you to take their own test.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM counts correctly typed characters divided by five (the standard word length) per minute. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes typed correctly, including mistakes you fixed.
Can I retake the test to get a better certificate?
Yes. Every full 1- or 3-minute run can produce a new certificate. Your earned certificates are listed on this page on this device so you can download them again.
Which words are used in the test?
Words drawn from the 1,000 most common English words, in lowercase, so the result reflects real everyday typing speed.
