Vietnamese Typing Test
Type common Vietnamese words, accents included, and get your WPM and accuracy the moment you finish. Accented letters count as their own characters, so the test measures real Vietnamese typing.
Before you start
Test setup
- 569 common Vietnamese words
- Accents: the 12 vowels and 6 tone marks, plus đ
- 10 to 100 words per run
- WPM plus accuracy
How to take it
- Click the test area and start typing; the clock starts on your first key.
- Type the letters exactly as they appear, including the 12 vowels and 6 tone marks, plus đ.
- Choose 25, 50 or 100 words before you start to change the length.
- Fix mistakes with Backspace; corrected errors still count in accuracy.
How scoring works
WPM uses the standard five-character word. A letter with a diacritic counts as one character, the same as any other letter.
About the vietnamese test
The Vietnamese test uses TypePlay's list of 569 common Vietnamese words, written for typing practice. Typical words: và, của, không, một, những, người, trong, có. Longer ones include nghiên, chuyện, trường, huyện.
Typing Vietnamese accents
Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet with added diacritics. Most people type with Telex or VNI input on a normal QWERTY keyboard: Telex uses letter keys such as a, e, o, w and d to add marks, while VNI uses number keys. The test uses precomposed letters, so each accented letter counts as one character.
Why practise in your own language
Typing speed is partly memory: your fingers learn the letter patterns of the words you type most. Practising in Vietnamese trains those patterns directly, so the speed you build carries over to the emails, essays and messages you actually write.
Tip for a cleaner run
Tone marks change the word, not just the sound. Type the whole syllable including its tone before moving on, and practise sets such as ma, má, mà, mả, mã and mạ.
Vietnamese typing test: common questions
Do I need a Vietnamese keyboard for this test?
No. A Vietnamese layout makes accents quicker, but any keyboard works with an international layout such as US-International, where accents are typed as a dead key followed by the letter.
Do accents count as mistakes if I leave them out?
Yes. A plain letter where the word has an accent is a different character, so it counts as an error. That keeps the score honest for real Vietnamese typing.
Is Vietnamese typing slower than English typing?
A little at first, because the extra letters add keystrokes and the word patterns are new. With practice most bilingual typists get close to their English speed.
